1928-29 14L Fan Hub Upgrade

Home › Tech Info

This is the fan hub assembly from a 1929 14L engine that has been upgraded to use roller bearings and a modern oil seal. The original fan used a thin layer of 600W oil to lubricate and separate the moving metal parts, and the factory recommended oiling it every 500 miles. Now the fan hub rides on both a layer of grease and roller bearings. The grease is retained by a modern O-ring that replaces the original felt ring, and extra slack is taken up by a custom-made brace piece. The shaft has been machined down to accept the new parts, then heat-treated for extra strength.

The exterior still keeps its original factory appearance. The work was done by Greg, who owns Kenyon Machine Shop in San Diego, California; Greg is a member of the DMAC and did all of the re-engineering and machine work. The unit now spins freely and won’t lock up the way stock units are prone to.
